Panama 2024 Retreat FAQs

  • This trip was designed for families with kids ages 4-15. Kids older and younger than that can DEFINITELY join and will have a blast too! We are equally eager to welcome grandparents/grandkids, aunts/uncles/nieces/nephews, any family make ups (including friends you call family)!

  • View a detailed itinerary here! (Subject to change slightly)

  • Betsy has traveled independently through Panama, and our whole family has spent a lot of time in Mexico and Central America over the years. Betsy and her family will be in Panama City when you arrive and will be with the group the entire time!

  • It’s really no problem. Betsy and her husband Alex are fluent in Spanish, but you will also get around just fine in English. Panama is very friendly to Americans and most people speak English well. We will of course be there to help every step of the way if you need it! The hotels operate in English as does the surf school.

  • Panama’s currency is based on the US dollar. In fact, you can use dollars everywhere, and pay with your US debit or credit card everywhere but road-side stands. You may receive change in Panamanian coins, and prices may be quoted in “Bilboa” but it’s pinned to the US dollar.

  • Don’t worry - we’ve got you taken care of!

When you arrive at Tocumen International Airport, once you go through Immigration and Customs and get your bag(s), a driver will be waiting for you with your name on a sign to take you to The Executive Hotel (~30 minutes). Once you arrive at The Executive, you can check into your hotel room, get settled in. We will find each other that evening, whether you arrive on Friday or Saturday.

  • Again, we’ve got you covered!

We've arranged for a coach bus to take our group from Panama City to Beach Break Surf Camp. The ride is 5 hours from city-to-sea, but PLEASE believe me that it's worth it! We will stop 2x for bathroom/snack breaks along the way. The same coach bus will take the group back to Panama City after the retreat.

  • Valid concern! We weren’t sure how our kids would handle it either. We learned that our kids can handle more than we gave them credit. Travel teaches us all patience, resilience, regulation, and going with the flow.

Let your kids show you what they can do! And there will be other kids in the group once you arrive in Panama City, so it won’t just be your kid(s) and you 24/7.

And we recommend and encourage you to do whatever you need to make the travel more easeful. This is 100% a judgment free zone of devices and screens to ease the rides!

  • Sure can!

Gluten free/dairy free. Vegan, Vegetarian, Grain free - available at Beach Break Restaurant. We will find options in Panama City as long as we know in advance.

If you or your family have allergies, please make sure you let us know!

  • You will receive a recommended packing list 3 months before the retreat so you may start planning. But in general, it's a very casual and you’ll spend 80% of your time in swimwear! This is THE perfect trip to work on getting everyone to just take a carry on!

  • The therapeutic benefits of surfing are well-documented and a hot topic right now. As a mindfulness technique, it’s up there with yoga and other outdoor sports. The surfing package includes unlimited access to boogie board and paddlboards as well. While we encourage everyone to take advantage of this, if someone in your group is definitely not going to use any of that, we may be able to arrange a credit to be used at the restaurant or surf shop.

  • Reach out! I’m happy to answer your question, and you’re probably not the only one wondering!
